EAW: New Guinea by RockHPI v1.1

1.0 June-2000

EAW:New Guinea is an add-on campaign for European Air War. It covers the Papuan campaign in New Guinea from July 1942 to January 1943. From "Pacific Sweep" by William E. Hess:
"Preparations for the Guadalcanal campaign cut deeply into the flow of men and planes to Australia and New Guinea. The Japanese continued to press their New Guinea ground offensive in the summer of 1942 in the direction of Port Moresby, while Australian infantrymen fought a desperate holding action. Not only were Allied ground forces restricted by shortages of personnel and equipment, but Allied airpower was also forced into a holding and defensive role. It was the mission of American fighter units to defend Port Moresby as best they could and to participate in limited escort and ground-support duties.
As the Guadalcanal campaign progressed, the role of Allied ground forces and air units became more and more important, for the approaches to Australia had to be held or the costly campaign in the Solomons would have gone for naught."

To install:

Select the following planes in ECA control panel:

P-38H: P-38F
P-51B: P-39D Airacobra
B-26: B-25J
B-17F: B-17D
B-24D: B-24D
Hurricane: Kittyhawk IA

Bf-109E: Ki-43 Oscar
FW-190A: A6M2 Zero
Ju88A: Ki-21 Sally
He-111H: G4M3 Betty
Ju87B: D3A2 Val

Do NOT select place names in the ECA control panel AFTER installing the EAWNG files-there is a place name file included.

Unzip the files in the EAWNG.zip to your EAW directory. It is recommended that you use a Pacific terrain and the appropriate Pacific theatre skins as well as the Japanese speech pack available online at the Hangar.

Start the game and select a 1943 campaign for either the Americans or Germans (Japanese).

Design notes: I had a great time modeling the air war in New Guinea for EAW, and hope to finally get to fly it now that it's complete! You'll notice no flyable bombers-personally I'm in it for the fighter action, although I do plan to try and add a B-25 campaign. If I can work out how to set parked aircraft as targets, I think flying a B-25 strafer would be a lot of fun. There were a few other things I wanted to include (and still may in later versions) : the Dinah was present in New Guinea at the time (probably more than the Val) but it occupies the Bf-110 slot and I couldn't get the computer to stop using it for escort in the American campaign. There are a limited number of targets in this campaign-the airfields at Lae, Port Moresby, and Milne Bay, plus air support for the army fighting along the Kokoda track with a few convoy attacks thrown in, so I cheated by giving duplicate names to many of the cities. Buna was a hotly contested area and both sides may fly there. There is a good mix of escort and interception for the fighters and even some bombing if you're flying the P-40. While some may long for more ground action, I prefer the all-out fighter duels and EAW:NG reflects this. Please address any questions to RockHPI@hotmail.com and include EAW in the title heading.

Finally, thanks to Emil for some of the .str files!

Please enjoy!

---------------------------
version 1.1 March 2001

Updated files:
Campgr43.dat and Campus43.dat - US and Japanese campaign files

Tarnames.str - City/airfield names

Carquote.dat - changed the Japanese campaign opening quote

Main2.pic - I made a new mainscreen - for those who prefer he old one, it's included as "Old Main2.pic"-rename it to "Main2.pic" and save it into your EAW NG folder.

Sqgr43.dat and Sqrus43.dat - Squadron data for US and Japan

New files:
*.wsp - All the wsp files included are to remove the animations in the hangar screens. They come from a hangar screen collection, but the author didn't include his name in the readme.

Hngr**.mpc and Ousid**.mpc - There are new hangar screens for P-38, P-39, P-40, Zero, and Oscar.

*.ter - New Jungle terrain (thanks to Dom) to eliminate cities on the sides of mountains

Eaw16.hm - Hills file to simulate the Owen Stanley mountain range. If you don't like the mountains you can delete this file. They give a much more authentic feel to New Guinea, but OCCASIONALLY bombers will pile into them. I prefer the mountains since this is rare.

Grankl.str and Granks.str - Stan's Japanese ranks

EAWNG.ico - I prefer to put New Guinea into a separate EAW installation due to the number of files involved. If you choose to do the same, make a shortcut for your NG eaw.exe then choose "change icon" and select EAWNG.ico.

Briefing.str - Reads "NG" instead of France, England, Germany, etc.

Frntline.str - Puts the frontline in France to get more missions that fly over the mountains, as is historically correct. Some missions will still fly over the channel-if I figure out a fix, I'll release it.

Pass**.pic - Now when you exit a campaign, you will get "Pass to Darwin" instead of "Pass to London" and "Pass to Rabaul (in Kanji)" instead of "Pass to Berlin." I did my best for Rabaul with the online Kanji translator I found, so any Kanji experts who spot errors, please overlook them!

Teleus.mpc and Telegr.mpc - If you should be unfortunate enough to die in the campaign, you'll get either a photo of a crashed P-38 or Zero.

Pp51b***.3dz and .tpc - I included an airacobra skin (not mine-author unknown) to which I added the "Cobras in the Clouds" logo of the 39th Fighter Squadron.

P109**.3dz and P109**.tpc - I included my Oscar .3dzs and skin.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at rockhpi@hotmail.com.

Enjoy!
